This inspirational speech is a good place to begin a site dedicated to my journey in the Master of Counselling program. It captures the essence of human challenges, and is a masterful work of wisdom that I would like to pass to my clients, family, and friends.

who am I as a counsellor?
THEORETICAL ORIENTATION
aN ever evolving & open-minded approach
When I look back at my earliest expression of my professional approach to counselling, written in Fall 2012 during my first course in the program, I notice that I was quite rigid and very convinced of my views. With further study, and a little bit of practical experience under my belt, I have learned that one approach may not be enough, and that other theories and considerations enter the picture. For example, I began as a solely cognitive-focused counsellor, and while I still have a natural bent towards that, I have developed greater appreciation for feminist theory, humanistic, strengths-based and DBT approaches.
My rigidity, and need to commit to one singular theory, has relaxed some. I am much more open to new views and approaches. I do recognize the importance of a solid theoretical approach, but I see the value in being knowledgeable and open about other theories that may help impart change, or inspire a meaningful intervention.
cognitive -behavioural
The way people feel and behave is influenced by how they perceive experiences in their world. As humans, we are sometimes prone to self-defeating and illogical cognitions that are driven by maladaptive belief systems. With support, guidance, and exploration, individuals can reflect on their belief systems, discover their misconceptions, and learn ways to increase positive feelings and behaviours by changing their cognitions.
person-centered
As a necessary condition for growth and change, the client-counsellor relationship must foster safety within the therapeutic alliance. The Rogerian principles of accurate empathy, congruence, and unconditional positive regard, are essential to encourage the in-session risk taking that is needed to make positive changes.
feminist/systems
Therapeutic value also lies in the experience of placing one's beliefs, behaviours and experiences within the larger social context, and to understand how social, political, and cultural systems have influence over us. As espoused by this view, the personal is political, and an individual cannot be adequately understood without considering the influence of gender, power, and other sources of oppression and discrimination.
